Heritage walk

Hyde Park Cemetery as an educational resource

Certain places, even those that may be familiar to us, can help us to learn not just about the past, but the present, too.  Hyde Park Cemetery is no exception.  This educational aspect is one which the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery are keen to develop and promote over the coming months and years.

A number of resources are already available, as below:

Self-Guided Walks - Leaflets
The Friends have produced the following leaflets, each one forming the basis of a walk around part of Hyde Park Cemetery, visiting the graves of several notable people.  Each leaflet contains a few lines of text about each of the people concerned.  Click on the links below to open PDF versions of the leaflets.

Guide No.1 - Notable Doncastrians

Guide No.2 - More Notable Doncastrians

If you are unable to print the leaflets from the above links, copies may be obtained from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council's Tourist Information Centre at:
The Blue Building
38-40 High Street

Themed Walks
Members of the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery lead guided walks from time to time, explaining a little of the history of the site and visiting a selection of graves chosen because they are linked to the theme of the particular walk on that day.  These themed walks often take place to coincide with the annual Heritage Open Days events in September.  For details of forthcoming walks please refer to the News page.

Illustrated Talk
An illustrated talk entitled "Hyde Park Cemetery - Past, Present & Future" has been prepared; it lasts approximately one hour.  If you are interested in having a member of the Friends deliver the talk to a group in the Doncaster area with which you are involved, please contact us.  A small fee is payable, with the proceeds going to the Friends to help them in continuing their work.

Schools' Involvement

Hyde Park Cemetery has the potential to be a valuable source of learning for local school children.  One way of achieving this is through the proposed involvement of a local school in 2009/10 in creating a wild-flower meadow within the cemetery.

Burial Records

The registers containing the official records of the graves and burials within Hyde Park Cemetery are held at Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council's Archives.  Further information about DMBC Archives can be found by following this link.

Doncaster and District Family History Society (DDFHS)
Over recent years, the DDFHS has accumulated a large amount of information concerning the burials and monuments in Hyde Park Cemetery.  For details of what the society has available, please visit the DDFHS Website.
